Portugal CrossFit training camp: intensity, breakthroughs, and community in the sun
Our first CrossFit Kreis 9 CrossFit training camp in Ericeira, Portugal, exceeded all expectations, offering a transformative week of intense training, personal breakthroughs, and community building. Designed as a true CrossFit training camp – not just a fitness holiday- , we focused on structured coaching, development, and pushing limits, with each session guided by our expert coaches Lucas and Erik. With 20 committed participants, this camp brought together skill-building, outdoor adventure, and powerful group energy. Blessed with perfect weather, we made full use of Portugal’s stunning coastal settings for nearly every workout. Here’s a look back at this impactful CrossFit training camp, the week’s activities, and the highlights that made it unforgettable.
Day one: Monday – surfing, running, and a snatch-focused workout
We began the CrossFit training camp with a coastal run, preparing participants for a week of challenges and growth. The first surf lesson quickly followed, where our 1:4 coach-to-participant ratio allowed everyone to get the guidance they needed. In the afternoon, we divided into two groups for a strength-focused workout with snatches, overhead squats, toes-to-bars, and target burpees. Lucas and Erik provided personalized feedback, helping everyone improve their technique and build strength. This intense, structured day set the tone for a serious CrossFit training camp focused on personal growth and fitness gains.
Day two: Tuesday – surfing, CrossFit Boarland, and an evening run
Tuesday began with another surf lesson, letting participants hone their skills with guidance in small groups. Later, we headed to CrossFit Boarland for a technical session featuring handstand push-ups, hang power cleans, machine work, and bar muscle-ups. The close 1:9 coaching ratio supported each participant, and some even achieved their first-ever handstand push-ups and muscle-ups. The day wrapped up with a scenic evening run, a fitting end to a day of progress and energy.
Day three: Wednesday – yoga and barefoot beach ‘Loredo’
Wednesday’s activities took us to the beach for a barefoot workout, starting with yoga to build flexibility and prep for the unique environment. The workout, called ‘Loredo’, included six rounds of 24 squats, 24 push-ups, 24 walking lunges, and a 400-meter run—all on sand. The sandy environment added challenge, requiring stability and strength, and the personalized coaching ensured everyone pushed themselves while staying safe. For those who caught the surf bug, extra lessons were available throughout the week, adding to the spirit of adventure in our CrossFit training camp.
Day four: Thursday – core-focused workout and a leisurely 10 km hike
Thursday focused on core stability and recovery with a low-intensity workout designed to give the legs a rest. Later, we embarked on a relaxed 10 km hike, enjoying Ericeira’s scenic beauty and giving participants a chance to unwind and connect. This balance of recovery and social time added a special element to the CrossFit training camp experience.
Day five: Friday – yoga warm-up and CrossFit total
Friday was a highlight of the CrossFit training camp as we prepared for the CrossFit Total workout. After a yoga warm-up session to activate and mobilize muscles, participants tested their max efforts in squat, press, and deadlift. With an energizing atmosphere and personalized coaching, many achieved personal records, celebrating both personal milestones and the encouragement of the group. This session underscored the power of our training structure, offering a supportive environment to break through physical and mental barriers.
Day six: Saturday – partner workout at CrossFit Boarland
Our final day of the CrossFit training camp took us back to CrossFit Boarland for a partner workout with ring muscle-ups, burpee broad jumps, pull-ups, wall balls, and med ball cleans. The partner format brought out team spirit as participants cheered each other on and finished the camp on a high note. Those who wanted more surf time even fit in an additional lesson, with one participant extending their stay for more waves on Sunday.
Camp highlights
- Training focus: This was a true CrossFit training camp, not a fitness holiday. With a coach-to-participant ratio of 1:9 on average, every session emphasized skill-building and individual progress. For small group training and surf lessons, this ratio went down to 1:4, allowing hands-on instruction.
- Perfect weather: Sunny skies nearly every day made the coastal workouts and hikes a memorable experience, enhancing the quality of this CrossFit training camp
- Milestones and firsts: The camp saw numerous personal bests, with participants achieving their first-ever handstand push-ups, muscle-ups, and record-breaking lifts during the CrossFit Total. These milestones added to the camp’s high-energy atmosphere and supportive spirit.
- Community and connection: Beyond fitness gains, the CrossFit training camp fostered strong friendships, shared meals, PRs, and post-workout celebrations, creating lasting memories.
- Motivation and commitment: Participants were encouraged to choose the sessions they wanted, yet nearly everyone attended every single session, fully embracing the CrossFit training camp experience. This motivation continued after camp, with all participants back in the gym by Monday, building on the progress made.
