The (only) special gear you need for functional training
Have you ever thought about starting a new sport but given up because you don’t have the right gear? This is not going to be the case with CrossFit. The only thing you need to start with are sports clothes. After a while you may be interested in acquiring a few things to assist you with your training but the list is still very short. Here are the three essentials:
1. Shoes
The good news is that you do not need to buy specific shoes to start training. You also might find a suitable pair in your own closet. Just grab a pair of clean sport shoes for your first visit in the gym. Your coach will be able to help you out with the shoe choice when it’s time for it.
CrossFit and functional fitness training in general consist of movements that include jumping, running, weightlifting and gymnastics movements amongst others. The two features you are looking from a shoe to work well in this environment are versatility and stability. The typical CrossFit shoes are a blend of different sport shoes. There are many brands making shoes for functional fitness but the shoes you choose can be made for other sports as well.
The shoes you choose should have a grippy sole that allow you to change directions fast. The shoes should be fairly light and allow foot flexibility. However, the biggest difference between other sport shoes and CrossFit compatible shoes are the wide and flat heels! You want the shoes to be as stable as possible without being stiff. This feature is achieved through the flat outer sole.
2. Jump rope
Rope skipping is an essential part of this sport. The jump ropes we use are not just any ropes but so-called speed ropes that enable you to move the cable very fast. Most of the gyms offer jump ropes for the members to use. So do we. However, having your own rope makes sense for the following reasons. First, the length of the rope is adjusted just for you and no-one else. Second, for learning purposes it is valuable to always practice with the same rope. Third, a thin cable is sensitive for wear and tear. You can keep your own rope in a good condition and replace the cable always on time.
3. Gymnastic grips
You can’t train your skin. You can just protect it.
A part of functional training is hanging from a pull-up bar. The stronger and better you get, the bigger the challenge for your skin. Yes, keeping the skin in a good moist condition will help to prevent the ripping but the only real help comes in the form of gymnastic grips. The grips also provide a better grip from the bar and help you to save your forearms when performing gymnastic movements. There is a big variety of grips in the market. The best ones are the ones you like to use. Just pick a pair and start practicing using them.
Conclusion
The lack of gear is not going to limit you with the training. All you need to do is to show up in the gym. After gaining some training experience you might find yourself wondering about the gear. While there are many things that might be essential to someone – like olympic lifting shoes, tapes, straps, and weightlifting belts – there is only a handful of training gear for CrossFit that is essential for everyone. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your coach or the experts at Gear 9.
