How to stay fit during travels: Tips from a frequent flyer

Hello, fellow travelers! I’m Saara, and if you’re like me, you’re always on the move—whether it’s for work or leisure. The picture in this blog post is from last week’s Two-Brain Business Summit in Chicago. That is me in the white shirt!

One of the biggest challenges I face while traveling is maintaining my fitness routine. It can be tough to stay on track when your schedule is unpredictable and you’re away from the comforts of your gym home. But over the years, I’ve developed some strategies that help me stay fit no matter where I am in the world. Here’s how to stay fit during travels.

1. Switch your mindset to maintenance training

First and foremost, adjust your mindset. When you’re on the road, it’s not about making huge gains or hitting personal bests. It’s about maintaining your current fitness level. This shift in focus can reduce stress and help you set realistic goals. Instead of aiming to build more muscle or shave minutes off your mile, concentrate on keeping what you’ve already achieved. This way, you’ll return home ready to pick up right where you left off.

2. Get support from your gym or personal trainer

Before you leave, talk to your gym or personal trainer. Many gyms offer remote training programs or can set you up with a travel-friendly workout plan. We do that at CrossFit Kreis 9 as well! Our Travel WOD program consist of 30-minute-long sessions that you can do anywhere and with minimal to none equipment. This support is invaluable and helps keep me accountable. If you are a personal training customer, a personalized travel plan as well as accountability should be an essential part of your fitness plan.

3. Look for fun activities

One of the best parts of traveling is trying new things, so incorporate that into your fitness routine! Whether it’s a yoga class on the beach, hiking in the mountains, or taking a dance class, find activities you wouldn’t typically do at home. This not only keeps you fit but also makes your travels more memorable and enjoyable.

4. Consistency over intensity

Remember, consistency is key. Short, regular workouts are more beneficial than sporadic, intense sessions. Aim for 20-30 minutes a day. Even a quick bodyweight circuit in your hotel room can make a big difference. The goal is to keep your body active every day, even if it’s just a brisk walk or a few stretches.

5. Focus on moving, not just training

Don’t stress about fitting in a traditional workout every day during travels. Instead, look for ways to incorporate more movement into your daily routine. Walk instead of taking taxis, use the stairs instead of elevators, and take every opportunity to move. Exploring a new city on foot or bike is a great way to sightsee and stay active simultaneously.

6. Visit local CrossFit gyms

If you’re a CrossFit enthusiast like me, visiting a local CrossFit gym can be a fantastic way to stay fit and meet new people. Most CrossFit gyms welcome drop-ins, and it’s a great way to experience the local fitness culture. Plus, CrossFit workouts are designed to be varied and challenging, ensuring you get a comprehensive workout.

7. Start your day with a healthy breakfast

A good day starts with a healthy breakfast. Opt for nutrient-rich options like oatmeal, fruit, eggs, veggies, nuts and yogurt. A balanced breakfast will give you the energy you need and set a positive tone for the rest of the day. It also helps to curb unhealthy cravings and ensures you make better food choices later on. Why do I talk about breakfast when I am supposed to talk about training. Well, eating well will leave you feeling better and the changes are that you can also motivate yourself to exercise.

Conclusion

Staying fit during traves doesn’t have to be a daunting task. By shifting your mindset, seeking support from your gym, finding fun activities, prioritizing consistency, focusing on movement, visiting local CrossFit gyms, and starting your day with a healthy breakfast, you can maintain your fitness routine no matter where you are. Remember, the goal is to enjoy your travels while keeping your body active and healthy. Don’t press pause on your fitness when away from home and routines. Safe travels and happy training!
