Do you hate gyms? You’re not alone. At CrossFit Kreis 9 in Zürich Altstetten, we work with people who want to get stronger and fitter but don’t necessarily identify as gym people.
Some people dislike crowded fitness centres. Others feel uncomfortable training alone, don’t know what to do when they walk into a gym, or have tried several fitness routines without finding something they enjoy.
And some simply don’t like the atmosphere they associate with gyms.
If that sounds familiar, the answer isn’t necessarily to force yourself to enjoy a conventional gym. It might be to find a training environment that works better for you.
Why do some people hate going to the gym?
There isn’t one reason. In our experience, people can have very different concerns when they consider starting a fitness programme.
You don’t know what you’re supposed to do
Walking into a gym without a plan can feel overwhelming. There are machines, weights, exercises and unfamiliar terminology. You might wonder whether you’re doing things correctly or whether other people are watching you.
Good coaching can take much of that uncertainty away. Instead of having to figure everything out yourself, you have a coach who can explain the exercises, guide your technique and help you understand what you’re working towards.
You don’t feel comfortable in a typical gym environment
Not everyone enjoys the atmosphere of a conventional gym. Maybe you feel self-conscious, worry about what other people think, or simply don’t like the feeling of training in front of mirrors surrounded by strangers.
At CrossFit Kreis 9, we take a different approach. We don’t have mirrors in our gym. Our focus is on learning movements, building strength, improving fitness and enjoying the process. Not on looking at your reflection while you train.
Our coached group sessions also mean you don’t have to figure everything out alone. Your coach guides you through the workout, helps you with technique and adapts exercises to your ability.
You can focus on what your body can do, rather than how it looks.
You don’t need to feel like a gym person to get started. You just need an environment where you feel comfortable learning and improving. You’ve started before, but never managed to stick with it
Perhaps you’ve bought a gym membership, trained enthusiastically for a few weeks and gradually stopped going.
That doesn’t necessarily mean you’re lazy or lack discipline. Your previous training routine might not have fitted your schedule, your goals or the kind of support you need.
A structured programme, regular coaching and a community can provide more guidance and accountability than trying to motivate yourself every time you train.
You don’t see yourself as a fitness person
You don’t have to be athletic, experienced or particularly confident to begin.
Many people start exercising because they want more energy, better health, greater strength or simply to feel more capable in everyday life. They don’t necessarily want fitness to become their entire identity.
You can start where you are and work towards goals that matter to you.
A different approach to training at CrossFit Kreis 9
CrossFit Kreis 9 is a coached functional fitness gym in Zürich Altstetten. We offer structured training for people with different backgrounds, abilities and goals.
Our approach begins with the person, not just the workout.
We start by getting to know you
Before you begin, we arrange a personal consultation lasting around 30 minutes. This gives us time to talk about your goals, your previous experience, your schedule and any concerns you have about starting.
It also gives you an opportunity to get to know us, ask questions and decide whether our approach is right for you.
We believe that choosing a gym should involve more than walking through the door and buying a membership.
You don’t have to figure everything out alone
Our coaches guide your training and help you understand the movements. Exercises and workloads can be adapted to your ability and experience.
You don’t need to arrive knowing how to do CrossFit. Learning is part of the process.
Training becomes something you do with other people
A good training community isn’t about everyone having the same fitness level or ambitions.
It’s about being able to train alongside different people, work towards your own goals and gradually become part of a familiar environment.
For many people, that social element makes it easier to establish a routine and keep showing up.
Your training should have a purpose
Whether your goal is to become stronger, improve your conditioning, build confidence or prepare for a HYROX event, structured coaching gives your training direction.
You don’t need to chase every fitness trend or work yourself into the ground at every session. You need an approach that fits your goals and that you can sustain.
Is CrossFit suitable if you hate gyms?
It can be, depending on what you dislike about gyms and what kind of training environment you prefer.
CrossFit combines different forms of functional exercise, often including strength training, conditioning and skill development. Sessions are coached, and exercises can be scaled to different abilities.
You may enjoy this approach if you prefer having a plan, learning new skills, training with other people and receiving guidance rather than designing every workout yourself.
However, CrossFit is not for everyone. If you strongly prefer training alone, dislike group sessions or want a completely independent workout, another type of gym may suit you better.
The important thing is finding a form of exercise you can enjoy and maintain.
