GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro have changed the conversation around weight loss. For many people, they finally make it possible to reduce appetite, improve blood sugar regulation, and lose weight in a sustainable way.
At the same time, there has been growing discussion around muscle loss during treatment. Headlines often frame this as a side effect of the medication itself, but that is not quite accurate.
Muscle loss is a common consequence of weight loss in general.
Whether someone loses weight through calorie restriction, bariatric surgery, endurance exercise, fasting, or GLP-1 medication, the body typically loses a combination of fat mass and lean mass. This is not unique to GLP-1s. The real question is how to protect muscle while body weight decreases.
That is where strength training becomes essential.
Why muscle matters during weight loss
Muscle tissue does far more than help someone look athletic. It supports joint stability, balance, posture, metabolic health, bone density, and long term physical independence. Maintaining muscle also helps people feel stronger and more energetic during periods of calorie reduction.
When people lose muscle too quickly, they often notice reduced strength, fatigue, lower training capacity, and a slower metabolism over time. In some cases, rapid weight loss without resistance training can leave people feeling physically smaller but not necessarily healthier or more capable.
Strength training gives the body a reason to hold on to lean tissue.
When muscles are challenged consistently through resistance exercise, the body receives a clear signal that this tissue is still needed. Combined with adequate protein intake and recovery, this can significantly reduce the amount of muscle lost during a weight loss phase.
GLP-1 meds are not a shortcut around training
One misconception around medications like Ozempic or Wegovy is that exercise no longer matters. In reality, training becomes even more important.
People using GLP-1 medications often eat substantially less food because appetite is reduced. That lower energy intake can make it harder to consume enough protein and maintain training intensity without a structured approach.
Strength training helps counterbalance this.
At CrossFit Kreis 9, we encourage members using GLP-1 medications to approach fitness with the same principles that support any successful body transformation:
- Progressive strength training
- Consistent movement
- Adequate recovery
- Sufficient protein intake
- Long term habits instead of extreme approaches
The goal is not simply to weigh less. The goal is to become healthier, stronger, and more physically capable.
CrossFit can be adapted for every starting point
Some people hesitate to join a gym while taking GLP-1 medications because they feel self conscious, deconditioned, or unsure where they fit in. Others assume CrossFit is only for highly competitive athletes.
That is not how we coach at CrossFit Kreis 9.
Every workout can be scaled according to fitness level, mobility, injury history, energy levels, and training experience. Someone returning to exercise after years away will not train the same way as an experienced athlete, and they should not.
Our coaching focuses on movement quality, gradual progress, and building confidence over time.
For members using GLP-1 medications, this often means starting with manageable strength work, improving consistency, and learning how to fuel recovery properly while body weight changes.
Weight loss should improve quality of life
A lower number on the scale is not the only marker of progress.
Being able to carry groceries without discomfort, climb stairs without getting winded, sleep better, move without pain, and feel stronger in daily life matters just as much. Preserving muscle mass during weight loss supports all of these outcomes.
This is why resistance training is now widely recommended alongside GLP-1 treatment by many health and fitness professionals.
The combination makes sense. The medication can help create the calorie deficit needed for fat loss, while strength training helps preserve the muscle and function people need for long term health.
A supportive place to train in Zürich
At CrossFit Kreis 9, we work with people from many different backgrounds and starting points. Some members want to improve athletic performance. Others simply want to feel healthier, stronger, and more comfortable in their bodies again.
If you are using a GLP-1 medication and want a supportive environment to train safely and effectively, you are welcome here.
There is no expectation that you already know how to lift weights or have previous gym experience. Our role as coaches is to meet people where they are and help them build strength gradually and sustainably.
Weight loss is only one part of the process. Maintaining muscle, improving health, and building long term resilience matter just as much.
That is the approach we believe in at CrossFit Kreis 9.
